We caught up with COPA’s Youth Engagement Tutor, Hannah Johnson, as she shares the inspiring journey of her learner, Abbie Owen, and how the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme has helped her transition into employment.
Hannah Johnson said, “Over the past eight months, Abbie has transformed from a quiet and uncertain newcomer into a confident, motivated young adult with clear career aspirations – thanks to the support of the JGW+ programme in Caernarfon.
When Abbie first joined the programme, she was unsure of her direction and hesitant to speak up. Despite this, she quickly showed a strong determination to improve and grow. From day one, she embraced the learning opportunities provided, including writing a professional CV, participating in mock interviews, and developing key soft skills needed for the workplace.
Working closely with her tutor, job coach and alongside other young learners, Abbie found herself growing more comfortable and capable. Practicing interview techniques with her peers helped build her confidence, while the supportive environment encouraged her to challenge herself and celebrate progress – both big and small.
A turning point in Abbie’s journey came during a visit to Maesincla Care Home in Caernarfon. There, she spent time shadowing care staff and observing the meaningful relationships formed between staff and residents. The experience left a strong impression and helped Abbie realise that a career in care was something she wanted to pursue.
Throughout her time on the programme, Abbie has shown how much can be achieved with guidance, encouragement, and self-belief. From improving her communication and teamwork skills to exploring real-world job settings, she has built a strong foundation for her future.
From participating in our Jobs Growth Wales+ programme, Abbie has successfully gained employment with an apprenticeship in Health and Social Care.
