From the Classroom to a Military Career

We are incredibly proud of our former Jobs Growth Wales+ learners, Ryan Andrews and Charlie Howsen, who have successfully completed the Military Awareness Course. Their journey is a fantastic example of how our programme equips young people with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in the Armed Forces.

The Military Awareness Course is designed for 16–19-year-olds interested in a military career. It offers a blend of hands-on learning, essential skill development, and real-world experience to help learners prepare for their next steps.

Both Ryan and Charlie completed their initial training at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. Their dedication has now taken them to the next phase of their journey: Phase Two training.

Ryan will be heading to Gibraltar Barracks to prepare for his role as a driver in the prestigious Royal Engineers.

Charlie will begin his training at the Infantry Training Centre (ITC) Catterick, preparing to join the esteemed Welsh Guards.

This achievement is a testament to the hard work and commitment shown by both learners. We’re honoured to have played a part in helping them reach their goals.

The Military Awareness Course is ideal for those who enjoy practical learning and are considering a career in the military. It provides a head start in the application process, with guidance from military professionals to ensure the best possible preparation and experience.

MAC Tutor, Roger Snaith shares his experience working with Charlie:

“From day one, Charlie approached the JGW + Military Awareness Course (MAC) with unwavering determination and absolute commitment. Whether mastering the kit layout or pushing himself in the varied Physical Training sessions. Charlie also started to show some good leadership skills, his dedication shone through not just in his theory work, but in his whole attitude: supported his peers, and consistently pushed himself further. This wholehearted effort didn’t go unnoticed – it’s laid the strongest possible foundation for his upcoming Army journey and he is already embodying the values that will serve him well in his military service.”

All of us at COPA would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to both and Ryan and wish them every success in their future military careers.
