Despite facing significant health challenges and personal setbacks during her studies, Kim Blackburn utilised her qualification to build confidence and fast-track her new career.

We caught up with Kim to learn more about her inspiring transition from a 16-year career in the beauty industry to becoming a Duty Manager at 3D Leisure, Accrington.

16 Years in the Making

Before transitioning into the leisure industry, I spent 16 years in the beauty industry, managing a salon across two different sites. While I enjoyed my time in beauty, I eventually wanted to move away from treatments and explore a new career path.

This led me to take on a role as a leisure attendant. I worked in that position for two and a half years before deciding to further my career by enrolling in this qualification.

Turning Setbacks into Strength

I started my course with great momentum and was making steady progress. However, over the Christmas period, I faced an unexpected health setback. This temporary pause in my studies made me feel like I had fallen behind.

Upon returning to work, I also encountered a particularly busy period, which took up more of my time than expected. Despite these obstacles, I have felt supported throughout and am now focused on getting fully back on track.

Gaining a New Perspective

This qualification has had a very positive impact on my confidence and professional abilities. I feel much more capable in my role and have developed a deeper understanding of the industry. The skills and knowledge I have gained have been invaluable, helping me excel in my responsibilities and contribute more effectively to my workplace.

Exciting Career Progression

Getting promoted recently felt like a huge achievement; it really showed me that all the effort I put into this qualification was worth it. It is a major milestone in my journey and is incredibly exciting.

This achievement is a direct reflection of the knowledge and confidence I have gained through my course, and it reassures me that I am moving in the right direction.

Training Experience

I have had a fantastic experience throughout this qualification. The course is packed with valuable information and provides a well-rounded learning experience. My tutor, Helen, has been incredibly helpful, ensuring that I have access to the resources and guidance needed to succeed.

Beyond industry knowledge, the course has also given me new insights about myself, which I have found really valuable.

Next Steps

Initially, my goal was simply to progress within the leisure industry and grow within my company. Now, with my recent promotion, I have already taken that next step. From here, I plan to continue learning, developing my leadership skills, and embracing new opportunities for further growth.

My journey so far has been full of learning, challenges, and achievements. Despite facing unexpected hurdles, I have remained committed to my professional development, and this has led to real career progression. I am excited to continue growing in this industry and to see where this path takes me next!
