How an Apprenticeship Helped Ben Build a Career in Fitness

Level 3 Personal Training apprentice, Ben Cook, shares his experience of transitioning from a carpentry apprenticeship to a career in the fitness industry. He explains how the apprenticeship has allowed him to expand his passion, grow his confidence, and build the foundations for a successful future.

What did you do before your apprenticeship?

After leaving secondary school, I took a gap year before enrolling on a carpentry apprenticeship. However, I soon realised my true passion lay elsewhere. I began working as a duty officer at a local leisure center, where I completed both my Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Training qualifications with COPA.

What inspired you to do an apprenticeship?

I was inspired by the chance to expand my passion for the fitness industry. The apprenticeship has allowed me to lead classes and work with clients one-on-one, spreading awareness and inspiring people to become a healthier version of themselves.

How has your apprenticeship helped you?

It has helped me immensely. I’ve been able to progress both in my career and personally, gaining more confidence and the tools needed to provide a top-quality service. The course has also opened up opportunities for further growth, and I’m now looking forward to starting my next qualification in Level 4 Strength and Conditioning.

What are you most proud of on your journey?

Completing my exams and passing was definitely my proudest moment. I’d also like to give a special shoutout to my tutor, Katie Jones. She has been with me the whole way, helping me so much, and has always been reliable and easy to reach.

What is your advice for future apprentices?

An apprenticeship is an amazing opportunity that provides you with a strong foundation and many new skills that can be built on in the future.
